He married the love of his life, Betty Jewel Thornton, on March 4, 1950. In 1959 their only child, Susan, was born. Jimmie and Betty celebrated 67 years of marriage before the passing of Betty in 2017.

Jimmie was a 1946 graduate of Jamestown High School and graduate of The National Mortgage School of The American Bankers Association and The Ohio State University. In 1966 he was President of the Mortgage Bankers Association of greater Baton Rouge. In 1966 he also served as Colonel and Aide de Camp on the staff of Louisiana Governor John J. McKeithen. Jimmie and Betty shared a love for traveling and took many camping trips all over the country with family and longtime dear friends Jack and Mary Cutrer of Baton Rouge, LA. Fishing was the ultimate past time of Jimmie. He never passed up the opportunity to spend the day on the water and loved teaching the younger generations how to fish.
