S.D. Harlin (Samuel DeWitt Harlin) was known for the store that bears his name. He was born on March 24, 1852 to Alexander & Priscilla Ray Harlin. He 1st married Martha Kirkpatrick who died in 1914 and later married Flora Vance who died in 1942. S. D. & Martha had an infant son to die in 1893 and had no other children. Around 1898 they adopted a young orphaned girl named Lillian Brooks who later married O.E. Comer, Sr. "Estis" on October 3, 1909. S.D. Harlin's foster son-in-law (OE Comer, Sr.) purchased a half interest in his store and it became S.D. Harlin & Co. Samuel DeWitt Harlin died on June 28, 1927 at the age of 75. His store continued to operate for many years by his son in law and grandson (Estis Comer & OE Comer, Jr.). At one time SD Harlin was the oldest business in Monroe County. His epithet reads: "A friend of God and humanity."
