Gilbert Frederick Bollwinkel was born to Martha and Fred Bollwinkel on December 1, 1916 in Walnut, Kansas.

Gilbert graduated from Walnut High School in Walnut, Kansas with the class of 1934. He enlisted in the United States Army on May 20, 1942 and was Honorably Discharged on December 3, 1945 having served with the Civil Air Patrol in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe.

Farming and ranching were Gilbert's life long occupations. He loved to hunt, fish and travel. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington, and was a life member of the Burlington VFW Post #6491.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his brother C.H. "Blondie" Bollwinkel, and his sisters Bernice Welty and Caroline Viets.

He is survived by one niece, seven nephews, a sister-in-law Evelyn Bollwinkel and many friends to honor his life.

Funeral services for Gilbert were held on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington with Pastor William Viergutz officiating.

Burial with full Military Honors by the Burlington VFW Post # 6491 was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Burlington.

Visitation was held on Monday, March 3, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Love Funeral Home in Burlington.

Memorials may be made in Gilbert's name to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital and may be left at the Bank of Burlington in Burlington.
