Graveside services for Richard Wilborn Lowery, 79, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lowery died Saturday, November 2, in Virginia Beach. He was born in Virgilina on July 18, 1923, a son of Robert Stebbins Lowery and Dorothy Wilborn Lowery, who preceded him in death. Lowery graduated from Virgilina High School and attended the University of Richmond. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and was assigned to the officer training program at Duke University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He was honorably discharged in May 1946 and attended Washington and Lee University Law School. He received his law degree in 1948 and set up practice in South Boston, where he also served as a municipal judge. Lowery was a 53-year member of the Virginia Bar Association and practiced law in South Boston, San Antonio, Texas, New York, Chicago and Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Grimes Courtney, and a brother, Cecil Lowery. He is survived by his sister, Verlet Lowery Shelton of Sevierville, Tennessee, sons David D. Lowery of Austin, Texas and Mark F. Lowery of Richmond and daughter Hollis Lowery Moore of The Woodlands, Texas, two stepchildren, Ms. Jimmie Rehbock of Orland Park, Illinois, and Clyde Hudson of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by grandchildren Anne Katherine Moore and Elizabeth Moore of The Woodlands, Texas, Jason R. Lowery and Evan F. Lowery of Austin, Texas, Meghan O'Brien Lowery of Gainesville, Florida and David Wilborn Lowery of Richmond.
