Jack served in the U.S. Army during WWII, after which he returned to Roanoke, Virginia, completed high school, attended Roanoke College and graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he worked briefly for Sperry Corporation before joining General Electric in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he developed five patents and went on to become Vice President of Marketing for the Mobile Radio Division.
