HINSDALE - David L. Sherwin, 71, of 3880 Pennsylvania Road, passed away Wednesday (March 1, 2023) at Olean General Hospital.
Born June 16, 1951, in Olean, he was the son of Otis A. and Maxine F. Enders Sherwin. On Dec. 31, 1999, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Olean, he married Deborah A. Newpher, who survives.
David was a graduate of Allegany Central School. He was a self-employed carpenter and operated Sherwin Builders.
His passion was music, especially country bluegrass. He was an enthusiastic banjo and fiddle player who loved sitting in with anyone who would jam with him. He also loved attending jamborees with his brothers over the years. He was a skilled craftsman and built over 55 fiddles, with one underway at the time of his death.
Surviving besides his wife Deborah are three stepchildren, Diane (John) Hilyer of James City, Pa., Kenneth (Sheila) Mohney of Ludlow, Pa. and James (Sharon) Mohney of Sheffield, Pa.; eight step-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Donna Sherwin of Allegany; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Donald Sherwin, Kenneth Sherwin and Richard Sherwin; and a sister, Georgia Page.
The family welcomes friends to a memorial visitation from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean. A service will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, or to Total Senior Care, 519 N. Union St., Olean, NY 14760.
