Elizabeth Etta Crawford, lovingly known as Liz or Spee, passed away on February 25, 2023 at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Sioux Falls, SD peacefully and surrounded by family.

Elizabeth was born on July 1, 1946 in Sisseton, SD to Edward and Jeanette Kitto Crawford. Elizabeth was the 12th of 17 children. She was born between two sets of twin brothers. She grew up on the allotment of her grandfather: Reverend Charles Renshaw Crawford. This home is often referred to as the "old place back in the woods." Elizabeth attended the local schools in the area and graduated from Peever High School. She was active in school activities and was Homecoming Queen of her graduating class.

After graduation Elizabeth moved to Minneapolis, MN where she resided with her sister, Iva Crawford. She made her home there for over 50 years. Elizabeth's natural gift was serving and taking care of people. She started her career in the healthcare industry by working as a Certified Nurse Assistant. Elizabeth really enjoyed working with people. She took pride in providing the best possible care for patients that were in the final stages of life. She would often share her wisdom and experience she gained over the years with those interested in entering the healthcare field. She had a nephew and a granddaughter that went into healthcare because of her encouragement. Elizabeth will always be remembered as being very compassionate while continually serving her patients with dignity, respect and true humanity. She retired after 30 years of dedicated service.

Outside of her work life Elizabeth was very family orientated. Every year she would organize many family gatherings around the Lake of the Isles or other parks in the Minneapolis area. This was especially true around her birthday. Many relatives had their birthday around July 1st and being very inclusive she wanted everyone to get together and celebrate. There were many holidays where she would put a spread together. She would spend many hours shopping, cooking and preparing her signature dishes. One of which was a 7-layer dip. She taught her nieces to make this and they continue to make this every New Year's Eve. She also prepared many different soups for her siblings by request. She would make her sister Iva's favorite soup which was a chicken neck bone soup or oxtail soup. She truly loved and cared for her family members by making them their favorite dishes and having them ready for when they arrived from their travels.

Elizabeth was so much fun to be around. When she moved back to the Sisseton area she could be found at family and extended family gatherings. She always exuded a positive attitude towards life. She would not only make you laugh but laugh with you. She would make you feel comfortable. Over the years she provided that extra support to many family members, friends and even strangers when needed. She would give you her shoulder to cry on; a listening ear; an open heart to those in need; sit beside you so you didn't feel alone or just give you a hug of reassurance but more importantly, she would tell you that she loved you and you knew she meant it. Elizabeth was also a very loving and a very forgiving person. She will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion and she will be remembered as extending forgiveness to everyone as it wasn't her nature to hold a grievance.

Elizabeth had a very adventurous spirit. She loved to get in the car and go. She was always ready to go anywhere on a moment's notice. She really did love to travel. She would get her bag packed and get all dressed up before setting out. Over the years she traveled with many of her siblings, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. This past summer Elizabeth traveled with her sister Kay all over the great plains attending mission meetings; visiting with family and friends at Pine Ridge, SD and into Montana. The two sisters had the best time together and created many beautiful memories. Elizabeth had talked about expanding her travels even further by wanting to visit Alaska, California and Nevada.

She was a very devoted Christian. She loved to listen to gospel music and loved to hear her two nieces, Danielle and Rogene sing and play the guitar. She always started her day by reading her bible and taking part in her daily devotionals. She attended Sunday services at Goodwill and always enjoyed singing in our Dakota language.

She was active in local community organizations within the Minneapolis area. She served as the President of the American Legion Courthouse Post 310 Auxiliary of Crystal, MN. She was a member of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church and a member of the Presbyterian Women's Organization.

Special mention to her friends at her last place of residence, Jared Apartments. She would speak fondly of her time there. She enjoyed the welcoming by the residents, playing card games for hours and especially the snack parties.

Elizabeth is survived by her sibling: Kay Burshiem of Agency Village, SD. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren all of which held a special place in her heart.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents: Edward J. Crawford and Jeanette E. (Kitto) Crawford; her siblings: James Crawford; Iva Crawford; Bernita LaBelle; Edward Crawford Sr.; Herbert Crawford; Samuel Crawford Sr.; Joseph Crawford; Lyle Crawford; Lyman Crawford; Edwane Crawford; Abigail Crawford; Edwin "Big Nick" Crawford; Harlan "Terry" Crawford and two infant brothers.
