Lynne Regan Mullen, originally from Ogdensburg, NY and currently from Wake Forest, NC passed away August 2nd in North Carolina. Lynne was the daughter of the late Anne and Lloyd Regan. She was a 1966 graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Ogdensburg and earned a Bachelor's degree from Nazareth College of Rochester (NY). She held a Master of Science degree in Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam, a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University (Canton, NY), and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She also held the designation Grant Professional Certified.
Lynne married Terry Mullen, originally of Ogdensburg, in 1972. Mr. Mullen died in 1995. The couple resided in Potsdam, Norwood, and Canton throughout their marriage. Terry and Lynne had two sons, Robert of Plattsburg, NY and Mark of Wake Forest, NC.
Lynne was the former Director of the Academic Support Center at Clarkson University from 1980 to 1998 where she held the title of Director of Educational Development, Assessment, and Disability Services. She moved to Florida in 1998, where she served as Director of Radio Reading Services for WUSF Public Broadcasting in Tampa; Director of Education, Training, and Employment for Volunteers of America in Cocoa; Acting Director Grants and Program Development at Gulf Coast Jewish and Family Community Services in Clearwater; and Director of Grants and Development for Metro Wellness and Community Centers in St. Petersburg and Tampa. In 2012, she began freelance grant writing for nonprofits, universities, hospitals, corporations, and municipalities throughout the country, and served in that capacity until the time of her death.
Lynne was a former Board member of the International Association of Audio Information Services; past president of the Grants Collaborative of Tampa Bay; she served as Chair of the Consultants' Special Interest Group for the Grant Professionals Association (GPA), and served on the Program Committee of the North Carolina Chapter of the GPA; she previously served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of The Shepherd Center in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lynne frequently presented on the topic of grant writing and consulting throughout the country.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Terry R. Mullen, and second husband Anthony (Tony) Materkowski. Lynne is survived by her husband Ronald Phelps of Wake Forest, her son Rob and wife Kate (Thompson) of Plattsburg, NY; her son Mark and wife Toni (Catino) of Wake Forest, NC; and grandchildren Mason Mullen of Wake Forest, Destiny Danenberger of Plattsburgh, Alex Danenberger (wife Amanda and son Aiden) of Alabama. She is also survived by her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Cassie and maternal aunt Noreen Loper of Ottawa, Canada and paternal aunt (by marriage) Flo Larose Regan Tosh of Merritt Island Florida, and many beloved cousins in Ogdensburg and throughout the US and Canada. Lynne's life was brightened by her many friends whose prayers and thoughtfulness made her battle with ovarian cancer so much easier to deal with.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, August 11th from 4-6 PM at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest, NC.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg, NY on Thursday, August 16th at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Foxwood Memorial.
