Husband of Judith (Parenteau) Besso and father of Mark and Amy. He was a son of the late Herbert and Melinda (Atkinson) Besso. He spent his early life in Waltham, and excelled in sports, including basketball, baseball, and football at St. Charles Borromeo High School.
After high school, he was employed at Waltham Automotive. In 1954, he was Parts Manager at Hansen-MacPhee Car Dealership in Bedford, which was one of the original distributors of Volkswagen. He advanced from selling parts over the counter to becoming the National Sales Manager at Volkswagen of America.
Later in life, he took up tennis, skiing, racquetball, and golf.
