SOLVANG, Calif. — David Rolland Allensworth, 85, died at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, Solvang, California, after a lengthy battle with diabetes and Parkinson's.
David was born April 9, 1931, and soon after was adopted from the Cradle Society, Evanston, Illinois, by Francis M. and William R. Allensworth, Galesburg, Illinois.
He married Sara Jane Obenlander, his high school and college sweetheart on March 14, 1953. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 63 years; son, Douglas R. (Melissa) Allensworth, Novato, California; daughters, Chelsea J. Smith (Richard), Bozeman, Montana and Tenley J. Fohl (Peter), Solvang, California; and four grandchildren, L. Rolland (Amanda) Smith, Washington, D.C., Douglas A. Smith, Seattle, Washington, Margaret J. Fohl, Walnut Creek, California, and Emily J. L. Allensworth, Novato, California; as well as a brother, Robert, and sister, Sara (Josef) Michl, Boulder, California. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Drysdale, Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville, Virginia.
David was raised in Galesburg. He graduated from Galesburg Senior High School in 1949 and Knox College in 1953 where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After graduation from Knox, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy and reported to Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. He has commissioned an Ensign in November 1953 and served on active duty for forty months. He remained in the active reserves for eleven additional years and was honorably discharged in August 1967 as a Lieutenant.
After college and time in the Navy, David returned to Galesburg where he joined Allensworth Finance Company. He was a member of both the Central Congregational Church and the Trinity Lutheran Church. He served as a Director of First Galesburg National Bank (later Norwest and Wells Fargo) for 13 years. David and Sara Jane retired to Solvang in 1995.
David's greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. Additionally, he enjoyed traveling and reading; especially about WWII history.
Following David's wishes there will be no services. He will be cremated. Memorials may be made to the Sara Jane and David R. Allensworth Scholarship Fund at Knox College or the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, Solvang, California.
