Gilbert was a Private in the 4th. Florida Infantry during the Cival War. There is more about Gilbert and his brothers in the Civil War in the story by Robert France under the notes under their father Barnabus.

When I first went to this cemetery Gilbert and Mary had old stones. Within the last five years someone has put new stones on their graves. I have put the pictures of both headstones. Also, the group family picture is of Thomas Absalom and Emma Permeila Abbott Gay Family. Thomas was the son of Gilbert & Mary.

He was also known at Gibby. He was (an unknown value) in Farmer. He lived after Nov. 1835 in Providence Bradford Co. Fl. He began his military service on May 1, 1862 in CSA Army Pvt. on May 1, 1862, he enlisted at Jacksonville, Fl as a private in the 4th Fla. Infantry, Company F. (under the command of Captain George R. Langford). Gilbert's brother: Thomas, Lewis and William also served in this same Company F. During his term of service, Gilbert's company participated in the battles of Stone River, TN, Murfreesboro, TN, Jackson MI, Chattanooga, TN, Chickamauge, GA and Missionary Ridge, TN. On May 27, 1864, while stationed at Dallas, GA, Gilbert was captured by Union forces and sent to the famous prison at Rock Island, IL. Eight months prior to his own capture, Gilbert's brother, William, had also been captured and sent to the Rock Island Prison. There, in the unlikeliest of places, the two brothers were reunited. On March 6, 1865, Gilbert Gay was released from prison exchange, and he returned to the Confederate service. He was discharged on May 10,1865 and in his pension application he stated: "I was at home(in Bradford Co., Fl) on furlough at the time of the surrender of the Confederate Armies." Mary's own family was also greathly effected by the Civil War. Her father John Doke, died in January, 1865 near Richmond, VA while serving the 6th Regiment of the GA State Guards.

He lived in 1870 in Gilchrist Co., Fl. He lived on May 22, 1899. Gilbert applied for a pension from the state of Florida for his service as a Confederate soldier. In 1902, his pension was approved and he began receiving the grand sum of $10.00 per month from the state.

Gilbert was the son of Barnabus Chesley and Elizabeth Ann McNair Gay who are buried at Old Providence Cemetery, Lake Butler, Union Co. Florida.

Gilbert was a Private in Co. F 4th Fla. Infantry in the Civil War. He was captured June 16, 1864 in Dallas, Ga. He was imprisoned at Military Prison, Louisville, KY. He was at Rock Island Barracks.
