Alan K. Shirkey, Sr., 79, of Gladwin, passed away at MidMichigan Gladwin Pines on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013. He was born in Marenisco, Michigan, on March 8, 1933, the son of Felix and Pearl (Russell) Shirkey. He married the love of his life Norma J. Golden in Gladwin on March 30, 1957. She predeceased him in 1985. He was employed as an assembler at Buick Motor Division in Flint, Michigan until his retirement. He had resided in Gladwin County most of his life and was a member of F.O.E. Secord Lake Aerie 4121 as well as a Lifetime member of the NRA. He loved singing and music of all kinds, especially playing guitar. He was an artist and nature lover and loved to plant trees. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed motorcycles and snowmobiling with his family and friends. He is survived by his sons, Alan Shirkey, Jr. of Gladwin, and Steve (Monica) Shirkey of Sagola; daughters, Denise (Phil) Redman, Lana (Tim) Dowd, and Brenda (Brian) Fair, all of Gladwin; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly Jackson and Jean LaBean, both of Wakefield, and Norma Hansen of Adrian; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Shirkey; parents; grandson, Cody Shirkey; two sisters, Lorraine Burton and Vernie Sampson; and one brother, Calvin Shirkey. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor James Beck on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 1 p.m. with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Gladwin. In honor of his wishes, cremation will take place and his final resting place will be Ridge Cemetery, Gladwin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland
