Alma Alcock was born to John Henry Alcock and Melissa Anne Woolf in Winterset, Madison County, IA. Her brother, Clarence, was born in Scott Township, Madison County, IA. The family moved to a farm near Onawa, IA in 1882. Alma attended school in Onawa. She married James Gilbert Hennum 1 March 1896 in Onawa, IA. The couple lived at Maple Landing (Lincoln Township, Monona County, IA), near Whiting, IA and in Sloan, Iowa. They owned and operated General Merchandise stores at Maple Landing, Whiting and on Evans Street in Sloan. One daughter, Elsie Cecil (1908-1993) was born to the couple at Maple Landing. After more than 50 years in the general store business, the couple moved to a farm south of Sloan upon their retirement. James and Alma celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on 1 March 1946. Alma was active in the Eastern Star organization.
