Thomas served in the United States Air Force as a Technical Sergeant and was a Korean War Veteran. He moved to Port St. Joe, Florida in 1969, when the United States Air Force transferred him due to a death in the family. When he retired from the Air Force in February 1972, he began working for the St. Joe Telephone Company, and retired from there in July 1996. Thomas was a life member and a deacon of Highland View Baptist Church. He was an interim pastor at the White City Baptist Church and he has been attending Clarksville Baptist Church for the last 4 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie F. Burrows, his second wife Mildred M. Barry, his sister, Norma Mangum; his granddaughter, Sara K. Hayden and son-in-law Vicky Welch.
