Mr. John M. "Bingo" Barringer, 79 of Carthage died July 28, 2014.

Born in Carthage, where he lived his entire life, Mr. Barringer was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Annie Ruth McIver Barringer. He was a graduate of the UNC School of Pharmacy and for years, a partner at Shields Drug in Carthage. He later worked in retail pharmacies throughout the area until his retirement in 1996. He continued as a member of the North Carolina and the Moore County Pharmacy Associations.

Mr. Barringer was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, having served as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and on numerous committees. More importantly, He and Elizabeth raised their family also to be faithful servants of the church.

He was a Mason for 58 years. He served on the Board of Directors of First Carolina Bank and the Moore County Chapter of American Red Cross. He was a member of the Carthage Jaycees, who presented him with the Distinguished Service Award in 1969, and a member of Carthage Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years. In 1991, he received the Outstanding Citizen Award from The Rotary Club. Mr. Barringer was a member of the Southern Pines Elks Lodge # 1692, where he particularly enjoyed serving on the committee to send eligible boys to Elk's Camp. He was an Eagle Scout as a youngster and later became a Scout Master.

John enjoyed family, children, animals, books, parades and magic. He and Elizabeth enjoyed years of fellowship with dear friends, old and new. Both loved Carthage and supported town functions and school activities. He was a "people person" who loved talking with people, if not in person; on the phone. Family and friends will long remember the yearly "Happy Birthday" chorus sung to them by "Bingo" and for years, accompanied by his dog Lucy.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Charles F. Barringer, Jr., and sisters, Ruth Barringer Nowell and Betty Barringer Thacker.

The family will receive friends at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home Wednesday, July 30, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 31 at First Presbyterian Church, Carthage, conducted by the Rev.
