Alexander Carpenter, eldest son of William and Lemma Carpenter, was born October 12, 1861, near Chambersburg in Pike county, Ill., and departed this life at St. Mary's hospital December 22, 1943, at the age of 82 years, two months and ten days. He spent almost his entire life in Brown county.

Fifty-six years ago he was united in marriage to Julia Ann Hoover, who preceded him in death, February 13, 1922 (11 Feb 1922).

To this union three children were born, Mrs. Maude Stewart of East Tawas, Michigan; Mrs. Glenna Lewitzkie of Detroit, Michigan; and Rex of Alton. Besides his children he is survived by eight grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Dora Graves of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; Mrs. Luella Hoover of Wellsville, Mo., and three brothers, Oscar Allan of Alton, Charles and William of Mt. Sterling.

He was well known in Brown county and numbered his friends by his many acquaintances.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Rounds Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. W. C. Burk, pastor of the Mt. Sterling Baptist church. Interment was in Benville cemetery.
