Andrew Palko, Sr. , Roane County farmer since 1912, died at Harriman Hospital Friday at 6:15 p.m. He was 67. Mr. Palko came to America from Czechoslovakia in 1903 when he was a young man of 17 years. He worked as a coal miner in Illinois and Wyoming, later ran a grocery store in Colorado. In 1912 he moved to Tennessee and bought the farm in the Little Emory Community that he cultivated most of his life. For a short period he worked as a coal miner in Kentucky, while maintaining his permanent residence here For almost eight years he was a watchman supervisor in Oak Ridge. Death came Friday to the elderly Little Emory resident as his family stayed near his bedside at Harriman Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at 9 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, the church of which he was a member. Officiating was the Rev. A. J. Henkel, pastor of the church. Relatives arrived over the weekend from Lynch, Lexington and Louisville, Ky., Chattanooga, Tn. and from many other points. Burial was in the Palko Cemetery on the family farm. Mr. Palko is survived by seven sons: Andrew, Jr., Joe, Clement and Martin, all of Harriman; Al of Oak Ridge; Mike in the U.S. Navy and Ed in the U.S. Air Force in France; three daughters: Mrs. Cecilia Malenovsky of Harriman; Sster Mary Martin and Sister Mary Michael, both Catholic nuns of Nashville; one sister, Mrs. Anna Rogula ; one brother; Mike Palko of Rocky Springs Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
