Louis Elmer Sowers was known by just about everyone as "Granddad". He was loved by everyone, especially every kid in the neighborhood. He could spend hours smiling, entertaining, and chatting with them. All the parents knew their child was safe at the bus-stop, because Granddad would always be there watching over all the children. He was a guardian angel. For Larry, Susan, and Deborah...we were the most blessed of all, for he was OUR Granddad. He absolutely spoiled us rotten. If we wanted it, Granddad bought it for us.

Granddad was born son of William Parry Sowers and Susie Herring Sowers, both of Baldwin, KY. He had sisters, Eula, Violet, Elsie, and Nellie (she was killed in a car accident in 1915 at a very young age). His other sisters lived to old age and were very much a part of our family. His father ran a carnival so granddad and his sisters traveled working with the carnival. He served in the army in WWI (England and France 1918-19)as a Corporal, leaving at the end of his term with an honorable discharge.

He married Carrie Goosey, and they had two sons...our father Louis Elwood Sowers, and William Paul Sowers. Sadly, Carrie passed away when she was only 36. She caught a bad cold and died a week later. He never stopped loving her and didn't remarry. He kept pictures of her hidden in the bottom drawer of his chest of drawers, where I would sneak a peek. Before she died, Granddad and our grandmother, Carrie had left Kentucky for work in Dayton, Ohio. Granddad worked at Frigidaire and retired with 35 years of service.

That's when he came to live with our family. Granddad loved the Cincinnati Reds baseball team and one of my fondest memories is taking him to a game. He was absolutely brilliant and he's the reason we got all those A's in school. We had our own private tutor living with us. When the so-called "new" math came out in the 60's, he was right there learning it with us.

He lived to see all three of us get married. He died of old age, with fluid built-up in his lungs.

Granddad, you are so very loved. We still suffer the sting of your death. We are so very, very blessed that you were always there for us throughout our entire childhood and as young adults. We miss you so much. All our love, forever. Until we meet again, rest in peace dear granddad.
