Cheri Ann Lakeman, 54, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, November 24 2022, at Maine Medical Center, Portland with loving family by her side.
She was born in York, Maine on what she considered to be the greatest day of the year, April 26, 1968. Her birthday was a celebration that lasted an entire month. If you knew her, you were expected to keep the celebration going as long as possible. She shared that day with her idol Carol Burnett.

Cheri was the second daughter born to Charles and Sharon (Smith) Lakeman. She has been a constant support to them over the years, always available to help in any way she could to keep the "village" running. She would call each morning and ask what was "on tap" for the day. They were blessed to have her as their daughter and she leaves a hole in their hearts that can never be replaced. Cheri played a mean trumpet in her youth performing TAPS during Memorial Day services each year. One time she even woke the entire household up on Easter morning, blasting her trumpet bright and early because she was impatient and wanted to get to her easter basket. Cheri graduated from Jonesport-Beals High School in 1986. She is best known in her life for being an amazing athlete especially on the basketball court. Cheri was a star in her day wearing the number 34 although she always wished it was her favorite #22. When she entered high school, another basketball legend and her best friend Colleen (Libby) Prenda also wanted that number and they had to draw names to see who would get it. She wore that 34 well and remains one of the best players the Royalettes have ever had. She scored her 1000 points during the first game of her senior year. She only needed 12 points but somehow the tally was never really discussed and we always have said she could have easily hit that mark in her junior year. She loved the game of basketball putting in many hours on the little hoop in the backyard. She went on to play at Husson University and was awarded the Clara Swan award her freshman year and was also named to the NAIA District 5 All Star Women's Basketball team her sophomore year. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport. She shared each Sunday with her dear grandmother Florence Smith as she was the chauffeur for her to get there each week. Cheri's sense of humor was unmatched. She was always attempting to be the life of the party. Many times she'd arrive wearing a mask, costumes, or even her favorite Bubbles glasses. She was always trying to find a way to bring a smile or laughter to those who knew her. Even in her final days she kept her humor until the end with her witty comments and tricks played on her sisters and medical staff. Whenever we say AMEN it will always be followed in our minds with "and FM'. Cheri recorded so many different sitcoms and shows and loved binge watching them on the weekends. She loved the movie Wizard of Oz and her favorite character was the Scarecrow. We find comfort in thinking that she has now followed the yellow brick road. She was part of the Lakeman 5 as they were called in their younger years and they have so many great memories to carry forward. They each have their own special bond with her and she will be missed dearly by her older sister Stephanie (Steve) Baillargeon, younger sister Michelle (Jerrie) Lakeman, only brother Kevin Lakeman, and her youngest sister Stacey (Jeff) Balicki. Two special "sisters' ' Marla (Mike) Bagley, and Vicki Lakeman. She was a proud aunt to her nieces and nephews: Molly (Zach) Worcester, Lucas Baillargeon, Traci (Charles) Fournier, Kristopher "Little Dawg) Lakeman, Jordyn "JTB", Riley "Honky Tonk", and Jaxson (Beavis) Balicki. They each have so many memories of all she did with them over the years. From the 4th of July Kids Day, attending their sporting events, the Shrine Circus, even taking one to a WWE show, and so much more. She loved them all and they were her pride and joy! She will also be dearly missed by her first cousins who were like siblings Carrie (Doug) Flagg, Shaun (Christine) Smith and cousin Gina Collins (Matt). Carrie and Shaun spent much of their childhood summers with her at Sandy River Beach, and they had many sleepovers and adventures at CMVTI. She's also survived by her Uncle Phil (Jan) Smith, Uncle Coleman Smith, Aunt Dorothy White, dear cousin Glenda Gray, and so many special cousins (too many to name). Cheri had numerous dear friends in her life who spanned from childhood, college, and beyond but there are a few specials ones she held close to her heart: Terry Beal, Harlan Samuelson, Teresa Beal, Frank Alley, and Trudy Files. Everyone was special to Cheri and family/friends meant everything to her! She was predeceased by several beloved family members, to name a few: her maternal grandfather Philmore Smith (Garg), Paternal grandparents Anna and Lorin Lakeman, maternal great grandparents Hoyt and Velora (Lamson) Smith, paternal great grandparents Lorin and Vera (Hall) Lakeman, Willard and Ethel (Crowley) Carver, Aunt Carol Paradis, and dear great aunts Vannie (Reggie) Alley and Katie Foss. A celebration of life will be held at the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport on December 4th at 1:00pm.
