It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Breeden Collier, 91, of Crozet, Virginia, announces her peaceful passing on February 8, 2023, surrounded by loved ones and under the care of Hospice of the Piedmont.

Born on April 6, 1931, in Lydia, Virginia, Margaret was the daughter of the late Llewelyn and Juanita Breeden and was predeceased by her four sisters, Zelda Breeden, Roxie Marshall (Howard), Francis Tapscott (William), and Laura Herring (Leory).

Margaret leaves behind her beloved husband of 73 years, Elijah Collier, as well as her three children, Gayle Mohr (William), Phillip Collier, and Andrew Collier (Cailin). She also leaves behind four grandchildren, including Megan Mott (Riley) and Madison Collier, and one great-grandchild, Margot Mott (her namesake).

Despite facing adversity early in life, Margaret was a determined and resilient individual. After her father's passing and struggling to raise five young children, her mother sent her to Blue Ridge Industrial School where she spent most of her teenage years. She went on to complete her secondary education at Lane High School in Charlottesville and eventually met her husband at a Fry Springs Club dance. After their first child, Gayle, they moved to Crozet, Virginia, where Margaret lived until her passing.

Margaret was passionate about children and provided care to numerous families in Crozet and Charlottesville. Despite never having flown on a plane, her love for learning and discovering the world around her was evident in her passion for reading. In 1977, she became an EMT with her best friend June Seal and the two of them became charter members of the Crozet Rescue Squad, where they served for several years. Margaret had a green thumb and loved nature, often surrounding her home with beautiful flower gardens and attracting a variety of colorful birds. Margaret's life was one of love, compassion, and resilience, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Margaret's life on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 6 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, 201 1st St N, Charlottesville, Va., followed by a service on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m., concluding with a graveside service at Riverview Cemetery, 1701 Chesapeake St., Charlottesville, Va.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the fantastic care providers at Hospice of the Piedmont, June Seal for her weekly visits, and Luisa Replan for her loving, at-home care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Condolences may be shared with the family at www.hillandwood.com.
