James, age 78, was the son of Reuben Owen and Sunie Irene (Cannon) Dykes. He served in the US Marine Corps and graduated from Auburn (AL) University with a bachelors degree. He taught at Florida State University, the University of Kansas, and Troy (AL) State University. He married Mary Jane Roth on November 28, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri; she died in 1997. Survivors include his sons, Steven Dykes and Michael Dykes, his brothers, Downer Dykes and Charles Dykes, and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Private services were held in Panama City.
