ALBIA - Dean Earl Bettis, age 73, passed away peacefully after battling cancer and mild dementia on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at his residence, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Rev. Roger Henry officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Service Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023, opening to the public at 2:00 p.m., with Dean's family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday evening at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia. Memorials may be directed to Service Chapel Cemetery, Trinity United Methodist Church or the Monroe County Fairgrounds.
Dean was born on March 17, 1949 at St. Joseph's hospital in Ottumwa to Donald G. and Barbara Lucille (Kaldenberg) Bettis. He grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Albia High School, class of 1967. He joined the Army National Guard. He married Julie Johnson on September 7, 1968 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Albia.
Deans passion was agriculture and he purchased his grandparents farm. He also worked at John Morrell's, Chicago Rivet, Pella Corp, started B & B Equipment which is still in operation. He was a state fair exhibitor for many years and won many awards for top sales. He also became a realtor at the age of fifty.
He was Monroe County Fair board President for twenty-five years. He was inducted into the Farm Bureau Hall of Fame and also received the Agri Business Award. He received the Hall of Fame Award honoring Monroe County Cattleman, inducted into the 4H Hall of Fame and he received the Merit Service Award from the Albia Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Julie Bettis of Albia; mother, Barbara Lucille Bettis of Albia; children, Jeff (Steph) Bettis of Albia, David (Jerri Eakes) Bettis of Albia, Joleen (Mark) Hugen of Albia; grandchildren, Austin (Lexi), Ally (Gunner), Brooke (Logan), Skyler (Kate), Jaicee (Gage), Braxton, Daniel, Devin (Steph) Hugen, Zach (Madelyn) Hugen; great grandchildren, Lauren, Finn, Saylor, Tryce; brothers, Mark (Shelly) Bettis, Alan (Linda) Bettis, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
