Rich Valley, VA

Paul Denny Pratt, known as "Pete" by everyone in the Valley, was born on October 9, 1935. Pete was the youngest of five children born to Frank and Blanche Buchanan Pratt. He passed away peacefully on February 7, 2023 at Valley Nursing home in Chilhowie, VA.

In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Robert Pratt; and his sisters Virginia Lamie and Patsy Lamie. Pete is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ann Pratt; daughters, Debi Jones and Dana Chapman (husband Jimi); son Greg Pratt (wife Beth); seven grandchildren, Chaz Jones (fiancé Morgan), Alexa McGuire, Lindsey Pratt, Katie Pratt, Lauren Pratt, John Morgan Pratt and Tristan Preece (fiancé Jessica); two great grandsons, Cadyn and Eli Preece; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Pratt retired from the United States Gypsum Company in Saltville, VA after many years of service. He served his community as a Smyth County School Board member and as a member of the Industrial Development Authority, he served his country as an Airman with the United States Air Force being stationed in Tachikawa Japan and his Savior as an elder with the Cove Presbyterian Church. In addition to being proud of his military service, Pete was very proud of his ability to donate blood throughout his lifetime having donated more than 20 gallons of blood.

Pete was an avid hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman and farmer. Being "on the farm" was where he found peace and purpose. He loved raising cattle and "piddling" on the farm with his constant companion Milo, his best four-legged friend.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 at D. R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel in Saltville VA beginning at 2:00 pm with the Reverend Scott Spence officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery, Rich Valley, VA. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 pm prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Chaz Jones, Lindsey Pratt, Katie Pratt, Alexa McGuire, Lauren Pratt, Tristan Preece, and John Morgan Pratt.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to: Rich Valley Weekday Religious Educational Program or if you are so inclined for blood donations to the Red Cross.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the 3rd wing at Valley Healthcare for the excellent care they provided during Pete's long battle with dementia.
