Gary Hall Lewis, 80 passed away peacefully at Harrison House Senior Living in Georgetown, DE on January 31, 2023. He was born on February 3, 1942, in Kingsport, TN to Mavan Hall Lewis & Addie Mae Marshall Lewis. Gary was raised in Sylvatus (Hillsville), VA, amongst the Blue Ridge Mountains, and was blessed to be part of a loving and vibrant family, which included seven brothers and sisters. He loved nature and life growing up on the farm and had a deep faith throughout his life. Gary earned an Accountancy B.B.A. degree from East Tennessee State University in 1967 and worked at an accounting firm in Richmond, VA, until 1978, when he relocated his family to Milford, DE, to become the controller at Milford Memorial Hospital. After leaving the hospital in 1985, he worked at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, VA as the Director of Accounting but returned to Delaware after almost two years to become the controller for the State of Delaware, Department of Safety and Homeland Security. He earned an M.B.A. from Wilmington College in 1996 and retired from the State of Delaware in 2014. Gary had a private accounting business for several years. He was a lifelong Boy Scout and mentored Troops 186 and 911 in Milford, DE. He had been an active member of Avenue United Methodist Church since 1984 and was also involved with Relay for Life. Gary was always kind and generous and will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his patriotism, and his faith. Gary is survived by his children, Suzanne Reynolds (Jeff), Jennifer Lewis Handley (Sean), Lisa Breedlove (Michael), and Steven Lewis; grandchildren, Taylor Reynolds, Ethan Reynolds, Claire Breedlove, and Charlotte Handley; his siblings, Preston Lewis (Diane), Joyce Edwards (Ivan), Jeanette McCreary (Don), John D. Lewis (Sandra), and Ruth McCain (Clint); and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mavan (1973) and Addie (2007) Lewis; sister, Linda Huff (1997); and brother, Stanley Lewis (1980). A private funeral will be held at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia, with burial at the Mavan H. Lewis Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made in memory of Gary H. Lewis to a charity of your choice or either: Marshall-Lewis Foundation, Attn: Jeanette Lewis McCreary, 601 Clubwood Court, Marietta, GA 30068 OR Alzheimer's Association.
