Marvin Louis Riggs, a native of San Saba, Texas was born on November 17, 1924. He was the son of George Samuel and Katie Lee Riggs. Marvin passed away on February 2,2023. He was the youngest of six sons and one daughter. Marvin lost his Mother at the age of six and his Father never remarried. He began his education in the San Saba school system, where often it was very sporadic, having to join dad and siblings in working at various tasks. His education ended with hardly a grammar school level.
His working endeavors began at an early age when he began milking cows before and after school receiving $1.00 per week which he added to family funds. Work was always a part of Marvin's life, something he never shied away from.
When he reached the age of 17, he and his brother Earnest traveled to Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas to join the work force connected with the United States Army. His time in Civilian Conservation Camp (C.C.C.) in the state of Oregon was cut short when it was decided to close all of the camps that were not directly connected with the World War II effort. Upon closing the camp, he returned to Camp Bowie and was inducted into the United States Army. Marvin's stint was confined to basic training and was transferred to San Diego, California, where he was trained in Anti-Aircraft operations. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Army, he returned to San Saba and began helping his Dad with various jobs.
It was during this time that his young entrepreneurship qualities kicked in. Marvin acquired a truck and began hauling cedar posts, grain, and whatever he could to earn a living and began purchasing cedar posts from local cutters. This endeavor led to eventually having one of the largest cedar yards in Central Texas.
On June 10, 1949 Marvin married the love of his life (for 74 years) Barbara Louise Smith of Big Springs, Texas. This attractive young lady also became his partner in the business by becoming the bookkeeper, enjoying his enthusiasm in his work, hobbies and love for sports and she even joined the lady's softball league being quite the competitor. Together their business grew into semi trucking, buying and selling agricultural products and later ventures in feed manufacturing in Brady, Texas, and area feedlots, and a fuel distributor.
A year after their first business was established, not only did it grow, but so did Marvin and Barbara's family. Over time, there were four sons, Mitchell, Monty, Marcus and Matthew. God's involvement with the family was evident from their faithful attendance in church and their moral standards. Marvin served faithfully as an elder at the Father's House in San Saba, Texas for many years and Barbara was active as a Sunday School teacher, prayer warrior and anything else that was involved with the church.
Marvin was also dedicated to his local community. He served as a city council member for 33 years. He was greatly involved with the Golden Gloves program for kids, the little league programs as a coach and sponsor as well as other activities to help kids. Wherever Marvin and Barbara could make a difference, they were readily available. He had a deep love for the people of San Saba always trying to minister to many of their needs.
Marvin is survived by his wife Barbara, sons, Mitchell and wife Rebecca, Monty and wife Debehra, Marcus, and Matthew and wife Angela. Several wonderful Grand Children, Jessica Noble and husband Travis, Mindy Sebastian and husband Tim, Jordan Riggs and wife Yoki, and Piper Riggs. "Grand Daughter" Keely Guerrero, nine Great Grandchildren Hannah Noble, Josiah Noble and wife Katlynn, Asa Noble, Morgan, Micah, and Makenna Riggs, Macy, Olivia and Allie Sebastian. Many nieces, nephews and their children and extended families.
