Mrs. Joan Bell Whelan, age 90, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at University of Louisville Hospital, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Mrs. Whelan was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Grace Bell; her brother, Bobby Bell; and her wonderful husband of 62 years, Robert Whelan.

She is survived by her children, Michael Whelan, Monica (Frank) Lucas, Gery (Kim) Whelan, and Linda (Tom) Disney; six grandchildren, Angela Lucas Lechleiter, Roman Whelan, Adrian Whelan, Kass Disney, Matthew Disney, and Heather Belisle; five great grandchildren, Nora Lechleiter, Stacey Keith Janssen, Jr., and Lydia, Valerie and Mattie Disney; her dear friend, Lewis Sloan; three siblings, Billie Terrell, Don Bell and Janet Downey; and many nieces and nephews.

What she loved most in the world was her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed attending ballgames, dance recitals, graduations, birthday parties and anything else her children, then grandchildren, were involved in.

She enjoyed dancing and just days before the accident, was looking for a Valentine's Dance to attend. She loved to travel and was planning an upcoming cruise. If someone said, "Let's go", she was the first in line.

She enjoyed UK basketball and liked cheering on her CATS. Shopping was also one of her favorite things to do and she liked crocheting. She always won ribbons at the Meade County Fair and was thrilled by her grand champion ribbon a few years ago. She liked getting dressed up, her makeup and jewelry, and always tried to look her best. She never looked nor acted her age. She was extremely healthy before the accident. She would attribute that to a diet that consisted heavily of cheese, bread, potatoes, salad, peanut butter, chocolate, and more chocolate!

Joan's children and grandchildren would describe her as loving, feisty, fun, opinionated and caring, but most of all, their number one supporter. She will be so very missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 6, 2023, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, with Father Toan Do officiating. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday at Hager Funeral Home, and at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of service on Monday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Meade County Senior Citizens Center, or to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church.
