Aaron was the son of George Cunningham and Margaret Hughes of Haywood Co., NC. He married 1st to Sarah Adams Hughes, daughter of George Nesbitt Hughes and Sarah Adams. Aaron and Sarah had one child Margaret Ingibo Cunningham in 1846. Sarah died on 11 Nov 1850. Aaron married 2nd to Rhoda Saunders, daughter of Curtis Saunders and Sarah Moffitt in 1852. They were the parents of ten children that have been identified. Rhoda died on 26 Aug 1874. Aaron married 3rd to Rachel Lucinda Saunders, daughter of Henry Saunders and Nancy McCaslan.
Aaron served the Confederacy during the Civil War in Company E, 6th NC Cavalry. He joined the service on 8 August 1863.
At the time of his death in 1892, Aaron lived in the Iotla Community, 3 miles north of Franklin, NC.
