Donald Arthur Relihan, M.D., age 96, died Friday, January 27, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Terrence (Ted) and Mona Derge Relihan and his brother Terry, all of Smith Center, Kansas where he was born and raised, his wife of 68 years Mary McGinty Relihan, and his daughter Anne Relihan Rounds.


Don served in the Army during World War II and received training at Ft. Bragg, NC in fire direction and control in the field artillery. Later when stationed in Germany, he studied at the Army Intelligence school after which he was assigned as the non-commissioned intelligence officer (S-2) for an armored field artillery battalion of the First Armored Division. Because of that position, he was privileged to attend the War Crimes Trial taking place in Nuremberg, Germany.


Following his Army service, Don returned to college at the University of Kansas where he earned his medical degree in 1954. After completion of internship and specialty residency training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, he practiced Ophthalmology in Wichita for forty-seven years, retiring in 2004. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He had held board positions in a number of professional and charitable organizations and had been an avid golfer.
