--Youngest of 5 children of James H. and Elizabeth Robinson Matthews. He was raised in Gastonia. He attended local schools, but like his older brothers, he graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga in1945. He earned his degree in Business at Davidson College in 1949, where he was on the track team and a member of Kappa Alpha.
--U.S. Army Reserves Veteran. Frank served from 1949-1965. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
--Occupation: Frank enetered the family business, Matthews-Belk stores. He served as Executive VP and later President. After mergers, he was VP of Belk, Inc.
--Frank married Betty Choate. They were wed 63 years and had 3 children: Harriet, Eugene, and Mary. He was the grandfather of 4 and great-grandfather of 6.
--Lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, where he had served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Supt. and Youth Advisor.
--His community service included the Belk Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, and United Way.
--He was honored to receive the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.
