Randy Merrell passed peacefully from this life early Saturday morning February 23, 2008 after a year long struggle with prostate cancer. Randy was born on December 5, 1954 in Lordsburg, New Mexico, the eldest son of Earl Adair Merrell and Mary Fay Costner. He was raised in Animas, New Mexico with his brother and five sisters.

Randy actively participated in scouting, FFA, high school and college basketball, and was the drummer for The Cotton City Bollweevils Band and Butterfield Stage. He graduated from Animas High School in 1972. From 1974 to 1976 he served an LDS Mission in Rosario, Argentina. He earned his B.S. Degree from NMSU and his M.S. Degree in Agriculture Economics from Texas A & M. He spent most of his career in the farming industry.

On May 18, 1977 he was married to Barbara Capener of Las Cruces, New Mexico in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. Together they raised 7 children while living in Animas, Las Cruces, and Clint, Texas. His youngest son Allen is currently serving an LDS Mission in Tuxtla Gutierrez Mexico.

Randy is survived by his wife Barbara Capener Merrell; daughter Connie (Ben) Sowards; daughter Karen, son Brian Adair (Caroline); son William Calvin; son Ron Randall (Verenda), son Allen Dean; daughter Audrey Anne; and four grandchildren Lucinda, Sarah, Anna Marie, and Jared Randall.

He is also survived by his mother Mary Fay Costner Merrell; sister Julie (Bill) Ellena; sister Janis (Richard) Hardy; sister Louise (Wayne) Fralie; sister Carolyn (Bill) Harmon; and brother Bart (Hiroko) Merrell. He was preceded in death by his father Earl Adair Merrell and sister Jolene Merrell.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 29, 2008, at the LDS Venus Stake Center off North Main St. in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing there one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Animas LDS Cemetary where a graveside service will be held.
