The portrait of Marie at the right is from the 1935 The Agnita, the yearbook for the St. Agnes High School in West Chester, PA. It was her senior portrait. Alongside that portrait in that yearbook was the following information about Marie.

Marie E. Cotter

"Marie"

(Class Secretary, Basketball, Hockey)

"With a way all her own this versatile lass
Makes a good addition to our class."

Marie is one of our faithful class officers. We chose her as Secretary of our class. A wise selection, don't you think? We also have the pleasure of saying that Marie won the Knights of Columbus Prize. We weren't surprised at this for Marie is one of the talented members of our class. We know she will play her part in life as splendidly as she did in our Play, in which she took the part of Mary Magdalen. Goodbye, Marie, and may the rest of your days be as bright as your schooldays were.

In that edition of The Agnita, the essay that Marie wrote which won her the Knights of Columbus Prize was reprinted in its entirety. It was entitled . An excerpt from that essay follows.

He must be true to himself, or else in the long run, he will be false to all others. He must keep honesty and decency in his own private as ell as in his public life.

On Thanksgiving Day, 27 Nov 1941, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the COTTER family's first-born child, Marie Elizabeth, was married to George Edwin ADAM, a young chemical engineering graduate of Lehigh who had taken a job in a chemical plant in Trona, CA.

Note that in 1941, Thanksgiving Day was still being celebrated on the second to last Thursday by 32 states and on the last Thursday by 16 states including Pennsylvania. Late that year, congress enacted legislation standardizing Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday in November.

Marie and George were on their honeymoon in southern California when, seven days after their marriage, two MPs ran up to them on a beach and told them the United States had been attacked at Pearl Harbor and that they were to clear the beach immediately. Since George had attended a military school prior to college including a summer's military training, he knew he would have to quickly report for active duty which he did.

He was called to serve as an officer in the Army's 17th Infantry Division. Rising to the rank of Captain, George fought in the Pacific for three years and was wounded twice, earning a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for valor in the Battle of Attu.

Marie and George had seven children, one born in 1942 and the others born after WWII ended. All seven grew to adulthood and are living happy, productive lives.

Marie was Irish from both her mother's and her father's ancestries, and she was very proud of her Irish heritage. In her later years, one of Marie's favorite questions when she would meet someone new (and sometimes someone not so new) was "Are you Irish?"

The following obituary was written by Marie's family. It appeared in the Friday, 17 Nov 2006 edition of The Brazosport Facts, Brazoria County, Texas. Names of living descendants were in that obit, but they are not shown here.
