FORREST "LEE" AUSTIN BURLINGTON — Forrest Lee Austin, 71, of Burlington passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at home in the care of his loving wife and best friend Susan.

He was born in Burlington on Sept. 29, 1935, the son of Warren R. Austin Jr. and Marjorie Spooner Austin. He was the grandson of former Vermont Senator and UN Ambassador Warren R. Austin Sr. Lee wed his wife, Susan (Varricchione) Austin, of Burlington in 1965.

He was preceded in death by his brother Warren. A graduate of Syracuse University, Lee earned a degree in speech pathology and he participated in football and track. He served in the Army where he was a captain in the Armored Tank Division. He returned home and worked in Burlington public and parochial schools as a speech therapist. He earned his master's degree at UVM in speech pathology and taught special education at Trinity College in Burlington. Lee served in Burlington city government as an alderman in Ward 4 for two years and as city treasurer for seven years during the term of Gordon Paquette. In addition to that he was a Justice of the Peace. Lee was an avid gardener where his specialty was in shrubs and tuberous begonias. The begonias won many awards at different local competitions. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, bowling, skeet shooting, and playing pool with his friends at the Elks. He was a member of the Elks Club of Burlington where he once served as an officer. He will be remembered most for his gentle demeanor, humility, humor and kind heart. He enjoyed helping others as evidenced by the numerous times he opened his home to relatives who needed a place to live during different times of need. Lee is survived by his wife Susan, his brother John of Naples, Fla., and his daughter Terri Ann. He also leaves his three stepchildren, Kim Campagna of Shelburne, David J. Farrell of South Burlington and Cindy Bessery of Shelburne.

Thank you so much to his care providers, including, Dr. Jeffrey Rubman, Dr. James Wallace, and Dr. Dennis Sanders, as well as the VNA and Hospice staff who provided such wonderful care to Lee and support to the family.
