Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 24 Feb 1876 p2: "DEATH---The sudden death of George T. Holmes and his wife Marcelia M. Holmes, of Foxcroft, has thrown a gloom over the whole community. Both less than two weeks since were in the enjoyment of good health. Mr. Holmes was the last surviving son of Capt. Salmon Holmes of Foxcroft, and his wife was a daughter of Capt. Ellis Robinson late of Foxcroft.

Mr. and Mrs. Holmes had the respect and confidence of the entire community; and the loss to their immediate neighborhood is irreparable.

Mr. Holmes was an active, upright citizen, a kind husband and father, and a beloved neighbor. Two orphan children, a girl 13 and a boy 5 years old, and a father over 80 years old are left of his household. The survivors have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Their sickness and death affords a remarkable coincidence. Both retired in usual health Monday the 14th inst. During the night Mrs. Holmes awoke her husband complaining of a severe chill and pain. He immediately arose to kindle a fire, and find something for the relief of his wife. While kindling the fire he was also taken with a chill and pain. Early Tuesday morning medical aid was summoned, and both pronounced sick with pleuro-pneumonia. Saturday morning at 7 1-2 o'clock Mr. Holmes died. The shock to the nervous system of his wife, whose symptoms had been improving, was so great that she was completely prostrated, and being unable to rally, died Sunday evening at 7 1-2 o'clock, 36 hours from the time her husband died.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon where a very large concourse of people gathered together to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed friends and neighbors.

The first prayer was made by Rev. H. A. Loring. Select hymns were then read by Rev. W. H. Williams. After which remarks and prayer were made by the pastor of the church, Rev. E. A. Van Klecck.

The Masonic ceremonies were conducted by Master James T. Roberts, of Mosaic Lodge, of which Mr. Holmes was a member.

The exercises throughout were solemn and impressive; the scene was one which has never before been witnessed by our townspeople."
