Matthew Leydens Ahlbrecht was born on August 13, 1974 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He also lived in Davenport, Ottumwa, and West Des Moines, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1993. After graduation, he moved with his parents to Chillicothe, MO.

Matthew was disabled due to a history of illnesses starting with a brain tumor at age 3. Epilepsy due to damage from radiation treatment following surgery was never completely controlled by medication and challenged him his whole life. During his earlier years he persevered and played golf. He enjoyed chess, bridge, and other card games. He was a loving, caring person and did not let his disabilities interfere with living his life.

As a child he attended Sunday school and church regularly and was a member of Chillicothe United Methodist Church.

Matthew passed away peacefully on January 5, 2023 in Sarasota, FL. He is survived by his parents, William and Shari Ahlbrecht of Chillicothe, sister Kristin (Tim) Welter, of Urbandale, IA, sister Jennifer (Rich) Puszczewicz, of Chicago, IL, brother Will who lives in Wyoming, and sister-in-law, Aimy Cory, of Des Moines, IA. He is also survived by two nephews, Eric Welter, of Boston MA, Michale Anderson, of West Des Moines, IA, and a niece, Casey Anderson, of West Des Moines, IA, two uncles, Charles (Kaylynn) Ahlbrecht of Grand Junction, CO, and Greg (LaVonne) Ankeney of Denton, TX, and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 11:00 am. Graveside services will be at Friends Cemetery, New Sharon, on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Memorial Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri and/or Stead Children's Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.
