A noted architect, Hewitt graduate from the University of Chicago and also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After returning from Paris he went to work for the Western Electric Company in Chicago and in 1907 moved to Denver, Colorado and established his own practice. The following year he partnered with Maurice Briscoe, together they designed the Brecht Candy Company and the campus of the Clayton College for Boys, both in Denver. The partnership dissolved and Hewitt moved to Los Angeles in 1913 where he specialized in designing schools and several residential structures as well. Hewitt built religious structures for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hollywood in 1921 and the Westlake Masonic Temple in Los Angeles in 1914.
