Memorial Services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Bagley, Minnesota with a visitation one hour prior. The officiant will be Pastor John Anderson. Interment will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Bagley, Minnesota in the Spring.
Velva was born October 12, 1939, at Bagley, Minnesota the daughter of Clarence and Alice (Bjerke) Nelson. Velva was baptized and confirmed into Christian Faith at Emmanuel Lutheran Church near Bagley, MN. She graduated Clearbrook High School in 1957. Velva met the love of her life, Leroy Nelson at the Clearwater County Fair and she waited for him for three years while he was in the Navy. When he came back home, they were wed on November 22, 1958, in Holst Township on the family farm. They made their home in Bagley.
Velva worked various jobs such as a telephone operator, a secretary in the Superintendent's Office at Bagley Public Schools, a cashier for Thrifty White Store, and retired from the Farmers Independent. She was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church of Bagley, MN, where she was a charter member and very involved. Velva was your typical "Hockey MoM" and was always active at the Bagley Hockey Association.
She enjoyed family time, traveling with her husband, Leroy. They took many trips to the Royal Fork in Grand Forks for dinner. They also enjoyed outings to A&W in Fosston for her favorite treats.
Velva was a caring, loving, mother, wife, sister, and friend. She loved making lefse with her grandkids and going on family camping trips. She will be deeply missed.
Velva is survived by her children – Valerie Goodwin, Stacy (Butch) Kier, and Brent (Kathy) Nelson; her grandchildren, Jessica (Tim), Krista, Zachary (Bianca), Tammi (Eric), Terry (Logan), Jacob (Alicia), Taylor (Megan), Samantha, Riley, Casey, and Sydney; her great grandchildren, Jayden, Amiah, Marcus, Cammile, Neveah, Niah, Trenton, Taylon, Carlie, Waytt, Cheyenne, Holt, Karly and Macy, her sister Fern Aamodt and her nieces and nephews.
