Sherman was the son of Joseph Winfield Scott Flinn (Flynn) and Mary Jane Kinnamon born December 24, 1883 (per his WW1 Registration), on his parents' homestead located at Miller Cove, Blount Co., Tennessee. On Christmas Day, December 25, 1906, he got into an altercation with local neighbor, Nathan Dempsey "Demps" Harris at which time he shot at Sherman with a pistol. Demps was charged with attempt to commit murder and on February 1907, the Blount County court found him guilty as charged and sentenced to 3 years at the Tennessee State prison in Nashville. Sherman's father was a named prosecutor. Sherman survived the altercation and continued to live and work as a laborer in the lumber industry in Millers Cove. He never married. In the late summer of 1921, he sought treatment with Dr. Langrum through September. On November 7, 1921, Sherman died from Hodgkins Disease and is buried at the Millers Cove Cemetery in Walland.
