Walter Curtis CHRISTENSEN, 96, Kenmare, ND, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2023, at a Minot Care Facility.

Walter Curtis Christensen was born July 30, 1926 to Walter and Marie (Davick) Christensen in Kenmare, ND. He graduated from Kenmare High School at the age of 16 and went to NDSU for two years, then joined the US Army as a paratrooper in WWII. The war ended as he was on his way to the South Pacific. He was then stationed in Sapporo, Japan for two years as part of the occupation forces. It was there he found a passion for skiing. Following his tour of duty, he returned to NDSU to finish a degree in English. While at NDSU, he acted in several plays at the Little Country Theater, was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, and the FM Ski Club.

After college, Walt worked as the news anchor for a Great Falls, MT television station. There, he met Maureen MILLER on the ski slopes, and they were married in 1957. From there, they went to Sun Valley, ID where he was a ski instructor. Wanting to get back to North Dakota, he became the news director for KMOT television in Minot. Soon, he and Maureen returned to the farm in Kenmare. He farmed while also teaching English at Donnybrook High School. Walt's love of literature was an inspiration to his students. Listening to Walt recite prose and poetry was special, and he could make Shakespeare come alive.

In 1967, he took up farming full-time. He farmed hard in the summer and always found time for skiing in the winter. At the age of 84, Walt qualified for the Senior Olympic Games for his age division in slalom skiing. He continued to farm and cross-country ski, until moving into The View in 2020.

His love of literature inspired him to be a lifelong student. Over the course of his lifetime, he read hundreds of books, each of which contributed more and more to his character. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke it was worth listening to.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Tom) Feldner, Bismarck, and son, Lars, Kenmare. Grandchildren: Clay (Beth) Feldner, Grant Feldner, Annika Christensen, Andrew Christensen. Great-grandchildren: Leia and Jack Feldner; Sister-in-law, Carole Miller; brother-in-law, Neal Holter; nieces and nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maureen; brother, Lee; sisters, Myrna Christoperson Kline and Carol Bothun; nephew, David; brothers-in-law, Weston Christopherson, L. Patton Kline, Fred Ribe, Myron Bothun, and Robert Miller; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Christensen Ribe and Carol Holter.

Our deepest thanks to the staff at Mapleview for the wonderful care Walt received for the past two years.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring.
