Mary was the daughter of Daniel Brown Ward and Abigail Jones (Norton) Ward. She was the sister of Eben, Statira, William, Julia, Zachariah, Abby, Daniel, Gardiner, Nellie, and Elizabeth.

On October 14, 1849, she married Hiram M. Delano in Woolwich, Maine. They were the parents of Ella Gertrude and Albert Henry.
