Irene Switzer, age 107, of Ames, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022 with her daughter by her side.

There will be a public reception from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2023, in the Sarah Barlow Lounge at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 Sheldon Ave., Ames, IA 50014. A Private Memorial Service was held, with inurnment in the Columbarium at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames.

Irene was born on November 12, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest daughter of Norman and Catharine (Rentschler) Nettleton.

From a young age, education was very important to Irene. She attained a Bachelor's degree from Trenton State Teacher's College in New Jersey in 1938 and a Master's degree from Columbia University in 1948. Irene taught in schools in New York and New Jersey at the high school and college levels. Irene came to Iowa State University in 1948 to take the position of Assistant to the Dean of Women. Irene encouraged and supported her children and all of her grandchildren in their pursuit of higher education.

Irene was united in marriage with William Switzer on August 4, 1951 in Ames, Iowa. From this union were three children; Bonnie, Robin and Bruce. Bill and Irene were longtime members of Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames, where Irene served on various boards and volunteered in many roles throughout over the years.

Bill and Irene were involved in Playmakers for many years. Irene was a member of two gourmet clubs. She and Bill were early and avid supporters of ISU Women's basketball and held season tickets for many years.

Irene loved to have adventures and travel abroad with both family and friends. She especially adored her time in New Zealand, where she traveled several times to spend time with dear friends who became family to her. She and Bill were very proud of their family farm located in Dodge City, KS.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 2021; son, Bruce; grandson, Roy Nichols; two sisters, and five brothers. She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie (Jerry) Nichols of Ames; son, Robin (Ariya) Switzer of Florida; grandchildren, Jennifer (Annie) Switzer and Ele Nichols, both of Washington state and William Nichols of Ames; and great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Augustus Switzer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for a bench or paving stone, may be made to Bonnie Nichols and mailed to the Adams Funeral Home c/o Irene Switzer Family, P.O. Box 745, Ames, IA 50010.
