Stanley was the son of Stanley Wade Folsom and Margery Louise Schaaf. Stanley's parents divorced a few years after he was born, afterwhich his mother married Willard "Bill" LeRoy Smith. Bill adopted Stanley and the family settled in Durango, Colorado. After graduating from high school, Stanley married Margie Pebley and they had a daughter. He worked on the railroad before joining the Air Force and serving in Greenland. Stanley and Margie divorced and Stanley went back to work for the railroad. He married Barbara in Wyoming and they had a son. The railroad eventually moved the family to Pueblo where Stanley retired after 35 years on the job.
