James T. "Bo" Gates, formerly of West Alexandria and Columbus, died Monday, Feb. 3, in Sun City West, Ariz. Born April 15, 1913, in Charleston, W. Va., he was the son of James Leonard and May (Talbert) Gates. He received a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Ohio State University, and had received many patents for his mechanical inventions. Mr. Gates was associated with Owens-Corning of Newark, Ohio, E.I. Dupont Co. in Herkimer, N.Y., Bendix Corp. in Cleveland, Batelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ranco International Controls, Inc. and Mead Corp. in Dayton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances (Beggs) Gates, in 1995; a daughter, Diane, in 1942; and a sister, Mary Rolfe, in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, James A. (Beth) Gates of Surprise, Ariz., and Jeffrey (Cheryl) Gates of West Alexandria; a stepdaughter, Sondra Haynes of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Sonja (Michael) Bitsko of Lambertville, Mich.; four grandsons, Scott Gates of Phoenix, Ariz., James A. (Shelley) Gates of Lewisburg, Chris (Alicia) Gates of Miamisburg and Matthew Gates of Columbus; seven great-grandchildren; one nephew; an aunt and uncle, Mary and Arch Talbert of Monongahela, Pa.

A memorial service will be held at Fairview Cemetery, West Alexandria, at the convenience of the family.
