Born on July 8, 1928, in Pamlico County, NC, to George and Mattie Leas (Moore) Stevenson, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November, 1945 at the age of 17. During his 24-year naval career, Walter served aboard the aircraft carriers Valley Forge, Forrestal, Saratoga and Roosevelt and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean, and Vietnam wars. He told many stories of sailing around the world and crossing the equator. Following his retirement from the Navy, he attended St. Vincent's School of Radiology, graduating in 1972. Over the next 24 years he worked as an x-ray technician at the Northeast Florida State Hospital, the Union Correctional Facility, the Florida State Prison, and the Dunsford Clinic/Lakeshore Medical. After his second retirement, he worked part-time as a school bus attendant and driver.
Walter was an intelligent man who loved history, believed in the value of an education, lived frugally and had an amazing memory. He and his wife enjoyed fishing, camping, square-dancing, gardening and had a very active social life with many friends. They travelled with their Airstream to all 48 contiguous states and seven Canadian provinces. He was a member of the Oak Crest United Methodist Church from 1964 until it closed in 2012. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve and TREA (The Enlisted Association).
Walter is predeceased by his parents, two sisters, one brother and many friends. Walter is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, four granddaughters and six great grandchildren.
