Jimmie R. Barger, age 83, rock-hound, shutter-bug, beach-comber, and loving father and friend, passed away March 12, 2003 surrounded by his family and friends.

Mr. Barger was born June 8, 1920 to Mattie Marler and James Roland Barger in Graysville, Tenn. He was raised there and graduated from Rhea Central High School.

He served with the U.S. Navy during WWIl as [an] Aviation Metalsmith in the South Pacific, Corry Field in Pensacola, FL, and at NAS Pensacola, FL, where he and the former Hazel Shaver of Dayton, Tenn. were married in the NAS Chapel. They settled here in Pensacola where he later retired from NAS Civil Service.

After retiring, he and his wife spent several years traveling from Pensacola to the southwest and up the west coast to Oregon, meeting more rock hounds, trading rocks and making friends. Anyone who has visited the Interstate Fair or the Hyatt Environmental Center would have seen the sand bottles created with the natural colored sand obtained on his many travels.

Mr. Barger was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 57 years; six brothers: Cyrus, Pat, Paul, Perry, Posey & W.T.; five sisters: Joy, Lois, Pearl Ruby and Jewell.

Mr. Barger leaves behind his daughter, Gwen R. Jones of Pensacola; two grandchildren, Sherri R. Jones & Ron B. Jones, Jr. also of Pensacola.

Especially he leaves behind nieces & nephews in Tenn, GA, Texas and FL, as well as some of the warmest neighbors and friends. He would be overjoyed to know how much of a 'rock' they have been to his family.

Mr. Barger was a Lifetime Member [of the] Al Grey Chapter D.A.V., a founding member of the Panhandle Gem & Mineral Club, the National Rollin' Rock Club, a member of Pensacola Treasures Club, the original Pensacola Camera Club & The National Rifle Association.

The family would like to thank the nurses, Dr. Layne Yonehiro & Staff at Baptist Hospital Wound Care and the Nurses, Doctors & Staff at Baptist Hospital. The Nurses at Wound Care & Baptist Hospital are to be commended for their patience & help to a grieving family and the way they could bring a smile to very ill man's face. "Col. Sanders" would be proud. It's hard to remember individual names but please know you will be remembered with care.

Mr. Barger was an organ donor & was cremated per his wishes. His ashes are to rest in the Roaring
Creek above Graysville, Tenn.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 8, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. at West Highland Baptist Church where his wife was a member.
