Lucy Johnson Koteen, of Upper Fruitland, passed from this life into eternal life on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at the age of 104. She was born Sept. 22, 1903, in Bisti.

Lucy lived history and was always willing to tell family and friends of what she saw and experienced. She was raised by Asdza Tiis Shizhodi, along with her brother, Carl Johnson, and first cousins, Grace Smith, Albert Johnson, and Bertha Smith, the only survivor of the five.

Lucy was the matriarch of the family, inspiring both family and friends as an oral historian and traditional educator. She played a very important role in the Merrill Taylor family of Farmington, and the Jay Denton Simms family of Albuquerque.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Koteen; and her brother, Carl Johnson, who lived to be 100.

She is survived by her nieces, Lucy Lujan (Jimmy), Joanne L. Benally, Betty McKenzie, Helen Begay (Fred), Patsy Hanna, Beth Canby (Vic), Anna Johnson, Clorina Begay, Dorothy Notah, Alberta Miller, Mary Johnson, and Daisy Johnson; nephews, Raymond Smith, Raymond Johnson, and Paul Johnson; by four generations of grandchildren; also by special caretakers Becky Rhien and grandson, Andrew D. Johnson and wife, Margaret.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Ojo Amarillo Methodist Church, with Pastor Fred Yazzie officiating. Interment will follow at the Kirtland-Fruitland Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Johnny Hanna, Michael Williams, Andy Johnson, Todd Lujan, Dustin Johnson, and Roman Albert Johnson. Alternates are Marcus Benally and Quentin Y. Benally.

Honorary Pallbearers are Raymond Smith, Fred Begay Sr., Andrew D. Johnson, Michael Johnson, Gerald Johnson, Jonathan Johnson, Carl Y. Benally, Ryan Johnson, Derek Johnson, Kenny Garcia Jr., Raymond Johnson, Leo Jack Tsosie, Robert Hanna, Vic Canby, Jimmy Lujan, Tyrone Smith, William Smith, Buddy Benally and Tony Johnson.

A very special thanks to the Cedar Ridge Inn staff, Ann Palmer, N.P., Dr. Robert Rhien and wife, Becky, the Taylor family, the Simms family, and the wonderful staff at TJ's Downtown Diner, who accommodated and treated Lucy with "on the house" meals.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St., in Farmington; (505) 327-5142.
