William was the son of Hugh and Margaret Jones Babbitt. When he was 17 years old he joined the Union Army. From December 1863 to 29 May 1866 assigned to Company L, Twelfth Illinois Cavalry, Colonel Davis commanding. He was with General Banks at the battle of Alexandria and the Red River Expedition. He married Rebecca Rockwell on 28 Aug 1870 at Corydon, Wayne Co., IA. Their children: Selema, Carl, Icis,Pluma, Cecil, Ethel,Edith, Earl, Orren, Bertha, Harvey, Faye, Harry and Beulah.
