The Traer community was shocked and grieved this week by the death of Mrs. J. W. Dodd which occurred Monday evening in a local hospital as a result of strangulation of the intestines. She had been ill for slightly more than a week, but the seriousness of her condition was not generally realized. On Saturday she was removed to the hospital for treatment. The next days he seemed to improve, and it was thought she was out of danger. On Monday her condition took a sudden turn for the worse, and in the evening an operation was attempted in a last minute effort to save her life, but it was unsuccessful. Her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Fratzke were here from Blockton, Iowa during the last two or three days and were preparing to leave again Monday when the relapse came. A large crowd attended the funeral service yesterday afternoon at the United Presbyterian church with the Rev. B. M. Wallace in charge, assisted by the Rev. R. G. Smith of Tama, and the Rev. E. O. Dirks of Tranquillity and Salem churches. Burial was in Crystal cemetery.
Mrs. Dodd, whose maiden name was Vinessa Leal Berger, was a life-long resident of Tama county having been born June 9, 1880 in Crystal township. On January 1, 1902 she was married to James W. Dodd. The couple farmed until September, 1918 when they moved to Traer, their home ever since. Mr. Dodd was in the implement business for some years and more recently was a member and chairman of the Tama county board of supervisors. When a child the decedent joined the Salem Presbyterian church, later transferring her membership to the United Presbyterian church here. She was a member of Bona Dea chapter, O. E. S. of Traer. She was a worthy and highly esteemed citizen of the community, whose death comes as a severe loss to her friends as well as to her family.
Surviving relatives, besides the husband include the decedent's aged father, George W. Berger of Traer and three children, who are Leila, a teacher in the public schools of Britt, Iowa ; Mrs. Fern Fratzke of Blockton; and Paul of Traer. Mrs. Dodd also leaves one sister, Mrs. R. L. Lynde of Howard, South Dakota; and one brother, the Rev. T. G. Berger of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.
