Mr. John Morgan "Smiley" Whitaker, 67, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was a native of Toombs County, but he has been a lifelong resident of Ware County. He is retired from the City of Waycross garage, Wilbur James and Dixie Concrete. He was a member of Jordan Congregational Methodist Church.
Mr. Whitaker is the son of the late Noble Morgan Whitaker and Julia Bell Sellers Whitaker. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Louise Mixon and brother, Russell Whitaker.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lettie Lou Music Whitaker of Waycross; a son, John (J. W.) Whitaker of Waycross; two daughters, Felicia Johnson of Waycross, and Gail Whitaker (husband Gary Fullard) of Waycross; five grandchildren, Chrystal Whitaker, Aaron Johnson, Julia Johnson, Tiffany Nelson and Holly Fullard; a great grandchild, Harley Leeann Whitaker; a brother, Edgar Whitaker (wife Leaner) of Waycross; three sisters, Geneva White of Waycross, Dolphine Anderson (husband Buster) of Nicholls, and Virty Nell Morgan (husband Bobby) of Waycross; sister-in-law, Joyce Whitaker of Waycross; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at Telmore Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Music Funeral Home.
