Mr. Banitt, 81, of Red Wing, died Wednesday (Feb. 20, 2008) at his daughter's home in Welch.
Byron Frederick Banitt was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Zumbrota, and was a 1942 graduate of Zumbrota High School. He served in the Navy from Feb. 12, 1944, to May 19, 1946. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Zumbrota and married Bobbi Kern. In 1971, he founded Banitt Motors, which he owned and operated until semi-retiring in 1995. He continued to sell autos for Red Wing Automotive and was a pre-need specialist for Mahn Family Funeral Homes. He also raised emus and livestock; served on the church council and was an usher at St. Paul's Lutheran Church; was a member of Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54; and enjoyed watching his son at car races.
Survivors include a daughter, Robyn (John) Banitt-Pelehos of Welch; a son, Brad of Red Wing; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Ronald of Zumbrota; and a sister, Phyllis (Duane) French of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 3, 2005.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to a charity of the donor's choice.
