Singer, Songwriter. Canadian singer-songwriter with a career of more than 65 years who wrote several folk songs, most notably "Four Strong Winds" and "Someday Soon." Ian and his wife Sylvia were one of the popular folk duos, Ian and Sylvia, in the 1960s, they formed and fronted the pioneering country-rock group Great Speckled Bird. They lived on the Tyson ranch in southern Alberta, touring and performing across Canada and all over the World. From 1970 to 1975, Ian hosted a national television program, "The Ian Tyson Show, on Canadian Television Network (CTV), known as the "Nashville North." Ian was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. Albums included: "Ol'Eon" (1973), "One Jump Ahead of the Devil" (1978), "Old Corrals and Sagebrush" (1983), "Cowboyography" (1987), "I Outgrew the Wagon" (1989), "And Stood There Amazed" (1991) followed by "Eighteen Inches of Rain" (1994), "All the Goodtimes" (1996), "Lost Herd" (1999), "Live at Longview" (2002), "Yellowhead to Yellowstone and Other Love Stories" (2008). In 2005 CBC Radio One listeners chose his song, "Four Strong Winds" as the greatest Canadian song of all time on the series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version. Ian was a strong influence on many Canadian artists including Neil Young, who recorded "Four Strong Winds" from "Comes a Time" (1978). Johnny Cash also recorded that same song from "American V: A Hundred Highways" (2006). Ian was still touring, recording, and running his Tyson in Western Canada and continuing to write about the love of horses and the landscape. He released his most recent single "You Should Have Known" in 2017 which celebrated the cowboy way of life. In 1994 he was awarded the Order of Canada, In 2003 Ian received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award and in 2006 he was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence.
